ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
“भारते भातु भारती”
Sanskrit is the store house of ancient Indian culture and Literary Heritage. The Sanskrit language is one of the oldest languages of the world. The department of Sanskrit is an old as the college. It started its journey since 1948 the year of establishment of the institution. From 19957-1959 it started teaching General course under the same university. A large number of graduates were produced during this period with Sanskrit as a combination subject. In 1970 when the college was upgraded to a Degree College, both Honours and General course in Sanskrit were introduced and the same are running till date. At present the department runs with four full-time teachers Prof. Purbasha Ghosh, Prof. Hemanta Kumar Santra, Dr. Sujit Paramanik, Prof. Rahim Mandal and two ‘State Aided College Teachers’ (SACT) Smt. Madhumita Shil, Dr. Ritabrata Goswami. Prof. Purbasha Ghosh successfully act as the Head of the department and ran it with the help of three full time teachers and other two SACT teachers. At present Prof. Purbasha Ghosh is trying her level best to run this department in co-operation with three full time teachers and other two SACT teachers.
Teaching-learning is not just confined to regular class room teaching based on ‘Chalk & Talk’ method. But they are also encouraged to learn via virtual method.
Students publish a wall magazine named ‘KISHALAY’ in which they get the opportunity of expressing their original thoughts and feelings in terms of creative writing. They participate in sports and games as well as in the cultural competition organized by the college and institutions outside both at the University and state level. Their involvement in NCC and NSS programmes is also remarkable.

Departmental Student Achievements
The Students of the Department traditionally play a great role in the extracurricular activities of the college. The cultural function of the Reunion Day, celebration of Teachers’ Day of the Department as well as college usually begins with the “Mangalacharanam” which was performed by the students of the Department. The students take active part in the seminar, quiz organised by department. The students are regularly involved in NSS programme with some special activity. The cultural activities of the department peak during the Annual Cultural Program of the college. Remarkable number of students bagged different prizes. The Teachers’ Day is observed with much more enthusiasm every year in our department. Students and teachers participate together on this occasion. Department of Sanskrit has an alumni association that contributes significantly to the development of the Department as well as the Institution through their support .The department aims to foster stronger relations between the Alumni and the present connected with the college or department ,as we heartily realise that they are the important stakeholders in its continuing quest to provide overall improvement of the Department.
