About The Department

Netaji Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 1948 at Kalipur under the Arambagh Municipality. The college initially started as an Intermediate college with Science, Arts and Commerce at the Intermediate level, having its affiliation to the then Calcutta University. Department of Chemistry also started its journey way back since the very day of inception of the college as an Intermediate department. In the year 1958, the affiliation was extended to the undergraduate course with B.Sc. (Pure Science general), BA (general) and B. Com (general) under the same University. In 1960-61, after the establishment of the Burdwan University, the college got its new affiliation to The University of Burdwan. In the year 1983 ‘The University of Burdwan’ permitted the opening of Chemistry Honours course with 15 seats at the initial level. Since then the department has passed through a progressive journey. Department of Chemistry is one of the premier science departments of the College with a group of dynamic and dedicated teachers. Chemistry is taught here at the undergraduate Honours as well as General levels. The Department offers three year B.Sc. Honours and General courses. At present the department is nurtured by four full-time and two SACT teachers; two of whom are specialized in the branch of Inorganic Chemistry, two in Organic Chemistry and two in Physical Chemistry. To comply with the requirements for carrying out the variety of new experiments, after the introduction of the CBCS curriculum, the Department has developed a commendable Laboratory infrastructure for the benefit of the undergraduate students. Beside the existing three laboratories of the department, two new highly spacious modern laboratories have been constructed. The Departmental Library/ Seminar Library is well equipped with about 400 books (Text and Reference) for the use of the students as well as the teachers. To make the teaching learning attractive department organises seminars by faculties of various Universities and or other renowned institutions, arranges annual educational tours, quiz competitions and seminars by students. Remedial measures are offered to relatively weaker sections of students. Department organises career counselling sessions for the outgoing students every year. Seminar Library, ICT enabled smart classroom add up to the excellence of the infrastructure of the department. A very cordial teacher-student relationship prevails that promotes an all-round development of the department in general and the students in particular. The overall performance of our students in the university examinations as well as in the national level competitive examinations is quite good. The faculties encourage the students for taking up higher studies and research as their career and over the past few years a large number of students after graduating from the college have undergone higher studies from the affiliating University or some other University of the state or country as well as from reputed national institutes like IIT/ NIT/ IISER. The alumni of this department have exceled themselves in different academic and non-academic fields.
